about

One of the first songs that I wrote as a singer-songwriter, stemming from my self doubt that I haven't lived an interesting enough life to write songs. The words came to me while I was at work, and I jotted them down on a notepad that I kept in my my pocket.

lyrics

I've never worked in a coal mine
I've never thumbed my way across a state line
I've never sat alone and cried into my beer
So how can I tell you what you want to hear

I've never been in a bar fight
I've never shot a man just to watch him die
Can't say I've felt the devil drawing near
So how can I tell you what you want to hear

But I've slept in my car
And I've closed down my fair share of bars
I've been laid off and let down,
Cheated on and pushed around
I've had my share of heartbreak
But not more than I could take

I've never rode in a boxcar
I've never paid my rent by playing my guitar
I've never been the kind to live my life in fear
So how can I tell you what you want to hear

Now I'm down to my last dime
So I'll take it home one piece at a time
I've been put down and put out
I've had my troubles and my doubt
I've had my share of heartbreak
But that doesn't always make for a good song
